Egg Tonicity
1. Cell tonicity is a measure of pressure resulting from water concentration.
3.
Egg Solution Tonicity Measurement before
1 Water- Hypotonic 16 cm
2 Isotonic 15.5 cm
3 Hypertonic 16.6 cm
4. Solution Concentrations
5. Predictions:
- Isotonic Solutions: Have the same (water: solute) concentration as the cell's cytoplasm. This makes no change in cell shape or size.
- Hypertonic solutions: Has more solute and less water than the cells' cytoplasm. The water concentration and pressure is higher, so it leaves the cell and the cell shrinks.
- Hypotonic solutions: Has less solute and more water than the cells' cytoplasm. The water is forced into the cell and it expands.
3.
Egg Solution Tonicity Measurement before
1 Water- Hypotonic 16 cm
2 Isotonic 15.5 cm
3 Hypertonic 16.6 cm
4. Solution Concentrations
- Hypotonic- 0% NaCl: 200ml Di water
- Isotonic- 5% NaCl:(5g NaCl + 95g DI water)*2
- Hypertonic- 20% NaCl:(20g NaCl + 80g DI water)*2
5. Predictions:
- Isotonic Solution: will make no change. Measurements will be the same after soaked in Isotonic solution.
- Hypotonic Solution: The extra water will force itself into the egg and make it swell up. Measurements will turn out
6. AFTER SOLUTIONS
Egg Solution tonicity Measurements after solutions % Change
1 Water-Hypotonic 16.6 cm 3.75% more
2 Isotonic 15.56 cm .129% more
3 Hypertonic 15.4 cm -7.2% less

2 Isotonic 15.56 cm .129% more

7. Evaluation of prediction: Our prediction was pretty accurate. Everything we predicted is exactly what happened; the lab turned out great overall.
