Deer leg dissection
Ligaments are a dense connective tissue that connects bone to bone at joints. This is what is shown in these two pictures above.
The function of this cartilage is for the joints to move smoothly and easily.
In the middle of the bone is the spongy bone. This is soft and spaced out. The outer layer is the compact bone. This is hard for protection.
The spongy bone in the center of the bone can be seen better in these photos. In the picture on the left, the medullary cavity can be seen at the bottom of the bone. The outline of the bone is called the periosteum. Towards the top of the bone, there is a line called the epiphyseal line. The compact bone is between the periosteum and the spongy bone.
This lab was a good experience. We were able to learn how joints move and how cartilage functions. It is a dissection that is good for anyone to learn more about joints and cartilage. It is definitely worth the time and everything was planned out well.
